You set the timing by setting the point gap. On the older models they had a hole in the blower housing on the RH side and a mark on the flywheel so you could set them with a timing light. I don't think the 1200 had this though. The point gap should be between .018 and .022. Try opening and closing the points with the engine idling till it sounds best. Try to stay within the .018-.022 range though. You may have to adjust the carb and then readjust the timing.
