Tools to split wood by hand

From the discussion below it seems popular to split wooden blocks with wedges and a sledge?
We just use a sharp but steep taper grind on an ordinary 4lb axe. Pick the weak spot on the block, swing long and hard with full follow through and twist the blade angle a litle at impact.
Works well enough on maple,ash, hard wood cherry not the fruit cherry and beech. Some of the elm will split if the moisture is ideal and the air temps cool/cold.
Very rare to see a double sided axe or any of the "wonder" splitting mauls either.
