Making your own hydraulic valve spool would be difficult, but not impossible. I am a toolmaker--10 years ago I used to work for a company as a prototype technician and I used to make prototype valves in the machine shop. (these were for small transmission control valves) If I were making a large spool I would do the following. 1. get the dimensions of the valve spool you need to make. 2. turn the spool on centers. 3. make the OD to fit by continuously checking for fit to the bore. 4. emery the spool to a polished look. 5. find out what hydreco used for the steel material. Tool steel, stainless, 12L, or an alloy like 6150, 4140, 4340. I would not heat treat the spool because it will warp from heat treating and then it will not slip into the bore. Let us know what you will decide.
