IDF, With all the rain and wet ground we had in May and even June, had we waited until it dried out to ideal conditions as Ron suggests, we wouldnt have been able to get our soys in in time to have any measurable yield. Michigan growing season is far too short to wait for perfect soil conditions to plant. We have lessened the impact by no-tilling everything, but that isnt always an ideal situation either as stubble ground retains moisture. I was using a Massey 1500 4x4 articulate to pull a JD 750x20 grain drill, and there were days that I had to unhitch the drill from the tractor and pull it out sideways with a 30 ft cable several times because the ground was so wet in spots. This was July 5th and 6th. It would have been at least July 15th had we waited for "ideal soil conditions". That would have been too late, especially this summer with diminished growing degree days. I'm sure I could have accomplished the same with a FWA tractor, but definately not with a rear drive only tractor. I'd have had both tractor and drill stuck. FWA or FWD has a definite purpose in farming far beyond keeping up with the Jonses. They provide in addition to power transfer to the front, stability in soft or wet conditions, as the front wheels are climbing instead of ploughing.

I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
