I have used shellac or a satin polyurethane before. Sometimes they need a few coats to cover good. That old paper really likes to soak it up. Alot of people I have met disagree with it though. Don't know what they used that was supposed to be so much better. Hope I helped a little. If you don't get anymore responses on this board you may try the Farmall board as I think they probably do more of that.
