When (if?) the check gets there, take it to the bank. Let them know that you"re suspicious of it and see what they"ve got to say. If it clears (plus a couple of weeks or so, to make sure nothing "sneaks up on ya"), then I suppose it just might be legitimate and you could then release the tractor.

As everybody else has mentioned, I would run about as fast as I could (in the opposite direction, of course) from a check for over the amount. If he wants to play that "game" (and it turns out to be a legitimate check, which it won"t) then... hey, nice bonus!!
