Canola is the name applied to a group of plant breeding lines within the rape seed family which produce oil with less than 2% erucic acid. By reducing the erucic acid level the canola oil is sae for human consumption while the rape oil is only useful as a lubricant or in plastics. A by product of this plant breeding was that canola oil meal is low in glucosinolate which enables the meal to be used for livestock feed (whereas rape meal is unpalatible). All Canola is a rape seed but not all rape seed is Canola.
