generator cutout

My Cockshutt 30 with the original autolite generator has a cutout and the charge rate is controlled by a resister in the light switch. I need the proper switch.The generator charges but I have no control, I tried a heater switch with a resister for a 2 speed fan but it doesn't work can anyone help???
