A friend of mine is a civil engineer, and was on the east coast when Andrew hit in 1992, and was also in the cross fire of Charley and Francis last month. He just got back from helping in the panhandle with the aftermath of Ivan. Said that in his opinion the damage to the infrastructure (water/elec/roads/bridges) was worse than the prior big three hurricanes. I'm adjacent to Charlotte County that got nailed with Charley. Florida Power and Light, with tremendous help from power companies from many northern states, got the majority of the power up in just a couple of weeks. They had over 5000 workers rebuilding the power grid, and did a fantastic job. From the sound of it, re-building the panhandle power might take a bit longer.
