I know that feeling. Even with some compreesion in number 2, it wouldn't fire. Really knocked down to a two cylinder.

I went through the whole to30 engine while I had it apart. Everything new. Turned the crank and everything. REally runs good. I set the valves according to the manual and they sound too noisy for my liking but if they clatter they won't burn up!. Might adjust them up a little closer - find some sort of compomise point.
