It is always sad when I hear of one of those old planes crashing, or being lost in a fire. The pilot almost always dies, and the plane is a total loss. Being an ex Navy radial air craft engine mechanic (got out in 68) There is something about those radial engines being brought to life, I will never forget the sound. I worked on the P5 M patrol planes. These were large twin engine sea planes, that could only land on water. We had 12 in our squadron. Of all these planes there is only one left.
