FARMALL B Alternator

Purchased self-exciting alternator, installed, converted everything to 12V system. Ran lights, tractor died - DEAD BATTERY -. Mechanic says, rpm's on alternator much be high enough on start up to get alternator to self-excite. He showed me and sure enough with a good rev of engine on start-up, got a good ammeter reading of charge "+" (wires reversed in meter when converted to 12 V). Thought problem was solved. But now can't get to self excite anymore. Any suggestions, help, etc. etc. Appreciate much as want to do some night time mowing in heat of summer.
