Volunteering for the Navy in the Vietnam era was the next best choice for staying out of Nam, right after Guard and Reserves. Navy was widely thought to be the branch least likely to get you killed in a rice paddy. The heros volunteered for the Army or Marines. The rest of us tried for the guard, reserves or Navy. Kerry in the Navy was no more a hero than George (and me) in the Guard. Any heroism connected with him disappeared, in my mind, when I saw him in the same photo with "Hanoi Jane" (Fonda) during that infamous visit to North Vietnam. A slap in the face to all of us.
