We are in the same situation with our C-band dish; lost most of the West-coast feeds and many other channels are going digital......Can't decide whether to invest in a digital receiver or go to one of the small dishes. Don't think I'm ready to give up our big dish yet.....the (older) 920 receivers are $200-300 on ebay; the current 922s are as you stated (or more). If you go with Dish Network, how about posting back and letting us know what you think.......
