This is not like the automatic in your car. The engine powers a hydraulic pump at around 2000 psi. The pump powers the cylinders on the unit and the transmission. My unit is also poor vis vis hill climbing in 2nd gear and only fair in low. Mobile indicates it should climb around a 30 to 35 degree slope in low. Output from the transmission is mechanical driveshaft connection to front and rear Dana 60 full floater axles, not separate hydraulic motors on each axle. I believe you have to go to the 6100 series to get separate hydraulic motors. Transmission on the 5100 contains a single hydraulic motor to keep costs down. I am suspecting that my hydraulic motor needs repair based on the marginal hillclimbing but decent hydraulic system pressure under full stall. Other possible causes in your case might be dragging brakes. One caution with the hydrostats is that your brakes must, repeat must be in good working order with good safety handbrakes. Max wheel torque occurs with minimal pedal, so an attempt to stop a runaway will result in huge driveline stresses and may just simply snap a shaft or gear without stopping the unit. Hope this is helpful. Do you know a good source of used 15 inch wide tires and rim combinations for the unit? I have narrow semi-solid tires and the unit bogs down in soft stuff.
