one last thing not to forget. Before reversing the polarity for the test, REMOVE and disconnect the generator wires. You can leave it there connected to the belt so you can run the tractor, just disconnect all wires to it. When you have firmly decided to get an alternator, then take it off, and replace it with the alternator.
