One more idea to try. I had the same problem years ago and it turned out to be leaking air between the gas tank and the carburetor that was mounted on top of it. If I remember right, the fixit shop sold me a thin nylon washer that made up for the warpage of the tank when things got hot. I think it fit over the gas intake from the tank into the carb (directly under the carb). If your engine model is put together this way, might be the problem.
