Well, it depends on the shoes! I have a Meyer plow, and their shoes are a little skid kind of thing which swivels like a caster. They tend to dig in, and because they run a distance behind the cutting edge, they don't do real well. I got a pair of Western skids, and shimmed, adapted them to my blade. Western skids are a disk about 6" in diameter. Works much better. That puts the skids closer to the cutting edge, and the larger surface floats much better. If you are plowing over gravel, uneven surfaces, sod, or soft gound you almost need skids to keep blade from cutting in. I blew a angling cylinder once when the corner of the plow dug into some soft ground - and yes, the pressure relief valve works. Skids highly recommended - the bowl kind! I'm trying to figure out how to get a skid in the middle of the blade!
