Bill, I've never touched a cub before, but how about a gear puller? I don't know how big that gear is (diameter) or how far down the snout it's pressed on, but might be able to either pickup or rent a puller to pull the backside of the gear evenly as pushes against the snout. Or, a couple of $$$ to have an an rebulid or machine shop pull it for you. Just hate to see a part that you'll need get damaged. Also, a machine shop can weld up, then grind (machine) the journals back to the original specs (if spun a bearing or so), and heat treat if needs. Crank may not be scrap. It's not uncommon these days, not even in cams. Have had it done before, and surely will again.
