Having worked for one of the US science labs managed by a major university I have the following comments. Pay is 3/4 of what front running hi tech companies pay. Like working for the city or state. Safety is such an overwhelming issue that I wondered how I was ever able to get anything done. It is totally encompassing and boy if anyone did have an accident, of any kind, here came a team of x-perts from W. DC to understand why and how it would be prevented in the future. Then there is the political thing where they want to preserve their job and keep their $$$ allotment coming. Ever hear of the Superconducting Super Collider? Mark
