Farmall A no pulling power

My dad has bought a Farmall A that was running smooth until we put a chain to it and tried to get it to do some pulling(logs & such). It was the first 'real' work we tried to do with it. The engine would just bog down every time we let out on the clutch with the tractor in 1st gear.Is this just an engine problem or a transmission or what?? Any ideas would be great. (it also wouldn't crank after we shut it down that day)
