If you try to tie an unmatched pair of batteries together in parallel, and one is weaker than the other, they will drag themselves down, and self discharge. Battery life will be very short. If you do parallel a pair of batteries, be sure to start with a new matched pair, and they will grow old together gracefully. GM did this on their diesel cars and light trucks. I've had a couple, and have confirmed the battery concept several times. Have one in the garage right now.
