Mark, Years ago I had a simillar experience with United Way, or to better describe it as the experience with my employer as it applied to U.W. I was working for Dade County Parks and Recreation Dept. It was enrollment time for United way, and we were all given pledge forms to fill out and return to our dept. heads. I failed (refused) to fill out my form and was called in for a meeting with the head of the department to explain why my form was not sent in, and why I hadn"t pledged my support since the Department had already pledged 100% participation. My answer was that I was not consulted before my participation was pledged, and that I felt that they had no moral authority to pledge one dime of MY money. They told me that I could now amend my stance in order to make the dept. look good, and even if I pledged $1.00 per pay period that that would satisfy their committment. I refused on the grounds that I felt that my rights were being violated, and that nobody else had a right to pledge my money, no matter how small an amount. I was then told that my job may be in jeopardy. I"m glad that we both (parties) had tape recorded the meeting because that is probably the only thing that saved my job. I left the meeting holding fast to my position, and said off the record that I would make sure the right people got my taped conversation if anything was done to fire me, as my past job performance records and the tape recording would speak louder than anything they could present. That was the end of the incident, and the next year, they got the pledge forms distributed and returned before they committed to any percentage of participation to United Way.

On our first cosmetic restoration, not having a manual, we carefully marked the wires, taped the magneto in the position it came off, and were careful not to turn the engine over while we had these components off. We thought we could get by with this since the engine ran perfectly and would not need any internal work. After the cleanup and painting was done, we began reassembly and finally came to t
