I have a 674 basicly same tractor as 574 except the engine is tuned for more power on the 674 has the same cubic capacity though around 235 cubuc inches My previous tractor was a massey fergusson 165 same vintage but supposedly a less powerfull tractor, although I am hard pressed to see the differance in power between the two however the standard hydraulics o my fergy were inadequae for a front end loader so I needed an auxillary pump. The 574 has a german engine which has a sweet note and plenty of torque, and fast strong fast hydraulics the down side is the clutch is a little small in diameter so if using for loader work a kevlar or metalic clutch is recomended by my local dealer as a replacement. sometimes the lightning patern gear shift has trouble engaging, The German Neuss engine has a reputation for trouble starting in the cold I live in Northern coastal New Zealand so isnt a problem here. I broke mine in half yesterday the adapter plate between the engine and bell housing broke as well as the sump ( Iwas using it as a bulldozer) so not the tractors fault I am told if the tractor has a torque amplifier be cautious in assuming it works as many had problems. Also the hand brake works on a band and if left on will wear out the pads which can block up the transmission and hydraulics. Probably the bigest advantage of this tractor compared with similar tractors of the time is the operater is catered for with independant PTO excellent hydrostatic power steering and excellent operator platform no gear leavers in the way ,and plenty of space to put your lunch or tools around the seat. If u want a nice to operate tractor the 574 is it, if you want a low maintenance tractor of same vintage get a MF 165 series to 188 series tractor, as they have better brakes and the engine rebuild kits of fergies are cheaper than internationals here anyway. Ford, Deare and David brown also made good product through the 574 time frame

Grain Threshing in the Early 40's - by Jerry D. Coleman. How many of you can sit there and say that you have plowed with a mule? Well I would say not many, but maybe a few. This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
