The old 10 and 20 series diesel JD's started and ran on 24 volt. The downfall of the system was that they center tapped the 24 volts to run 12V accessories with no good system to balance the load between the two 12V batteries. This usually led to one battery being overcharged while the other was undercharged shortning the life of both. JC Whitney still sells the crank on 12V,run/charge on 6V relay. Seems to me the brand was somthing like orpin? I still have the one I used on an old 6V Jeep 30 years ago. They did work, but result in a nest of battery cables to series/parallel connect two batteries.
