From your description, it sounds like the same setup as my Fords have. That tube with the wire inside runs into a square box that has a plate cover held on with 4 bolts. Take that cver off, and you will likely need an allen key to get 2 screws out that retain the solenoid. Before you pull the solenoin, you can easily check for voltage to the solenoid, and rule out bad wires. The solenoid should just pull straight out once the 2 retaining screws are removed. as I said, I am just assuming that this is set up the same as the Fords, as they both sourced their FWD systems from ZF.
