If the charge rate of your 12V generator/alternator never backs off,it sounds like you have a voltage regulator problem. Check the system voltage at the battery posts with the engine running fast, it should be no higher than 15 volts with 14.2 being ideal. You say the tractor has a mag? If so the overcharge condition should have no effect on the mag coil,unless the mag has been reworked into a battery powered ignition system. With a mag converted to battery ignition or a distributor/coil ignition, very high charging system voltage may well be causing short coil and point life. If the mag is stock,try a new condenser and make sure it's mounting pad and elecrical connections are clean and tight.
