Cleaning a radiator.

I have a copper cored, brass tanked radiator from a thermo-syphon,(non water pump),system. It is very sound,and not leaking, has never been patched, and is not full of crud inside the water tubes. The problem is that the radiator has a lot of caked on grease and dirt on the sides and some on the fins. How is the best way to clean the outside and not destroy the copper core and the brass tanks. Would like to then paint it black. It is for a 1949 Earthmaster tractor. Thanks in advance for your advice. Gene Davis
