I think they are a good motor, and recomend them to any one. In heavy pulls, ours gets around 8-10mpg. On the highway, 15 mpg period. Every tank Of highway miles has been this. Our GMC with the 350 can't be begged or beat into better than 13 mpg on the highway. As far as power, the 6.8 makes GM's 350's and 454's look foolish. I have had experience with many different trucks and motors, but this is a good engine. The diesels are great to, but just as you stated, the V-10 is cheaper to buy, and much cheaper to maintain. A friend of mine had a powerstroke and lost the motor at a little over 100,000. $10,000 later he had an engine back in it again. Diesels are much more expensive to maintain and repair. You have to decide what best fits your needs.
