My dad and I collect toys and have been since the mid 80's. There was a time in there when we concentrated more on farming than on toys. We also have been expanding our real tractor collection a little heavily recently so toys are starting to go on the back burner again a little. My dad has around a hundred or so tractors. Some of them are older and some are newer. He collects mainly special edition models of whatever brand. I personally have a collection of 230 or so pieces strong. Just got done cataloging them the other week cause I couldn't remember what I had anymore. It's tough to go purchase toys when you don't even know what you have. I know there are people out there with much bigger collections than me. I dont specialize in one particular brand or the other. I am an IH guy above all else but I would bet there are probably more John Deere pieces in my collection than anything else. Mainly because most retail stores that sell farm toys usually have the green and not much of anything else. When I go for toys I look for ones that I like the styling and detail of. I have seen tractors of a particular make and model in one brand and bought it because it struck me as an interesting toy and other brands of the same make and model I have passed up because it wasn't as appealing. It don't matter if it would be a JD, Case, IH, Allis or whatever. If I dont like the way a toy looks or it's quality I simply don't buy it. As far as what you should purchase, which one is more convenient for you to store or transport? Do you want to take it to a show or put it in a display case? I think that a pedal tractor may hold it's value better than a 1/8 scale would but I could be wrong, I do not collect either of these sizes. I stick mainly to 1/64 and 1/16 scale. Also I tend to stay away from special edition toys for the most part with some exceptions. I look for shelf model toys first because the way I see it most of them are going to be played with and destroyed and there will be fewer of them in NIB condition in the years to come. Just the way that it is with the older toys now. Just my .02 cents. Have a good one.
