The 3.3 liter from the older Chrysler/Dodge are different motors altogether. I just finished the whole upper half of the 2.7l in my 2000 Dodge Intrepid with 95k. Yes sir, 3000 mile interval oil changes and I"m one of the lucky ones that made it that far. Cost me about $1100 in parts and machine shop services. This motor was a all new design in 98. Chrysler did some good things with it like aluminum block, steel liners, good head design which is kinda like a hemi design. BUT, they made it a zero interference engine so when out of time valves get bent. If they would have used hemi pistons that would have been a done deal. Other stuff they done that makes you wonder are: why put a water pump inside the engine, behind the timing chain? When they go bad they weep, and now where will the coolant go? Into the oil. Just to change that you have to take the whole front of the motor apart, and almost the whole top half. The water pump is chain driven and to take it out, valve covers and intake/plenum have to come off so a cam gear can be removed to create slack in the chain. Then you get to re-time the double over head cams when you"re done. But it gets better. To keep that chain tight they put a tensioner that works off oil pressure. That little beauty mounts through the block and pushes on the chain. The oil passages aren"t big enough for proper oil flow, it gets hot (they have computer temp set too high before fan kicks on) oil breaks down, gets thin, pressure loss, then chain slack and guess what next. And speaking of heat, wouldn"t you want to keep that moter cool? Guess Dodge didn"t so they put the catalytic coverters on each side and bolted em" right to the manifolds keeping all that heat right in the engine compartment. I was told that they are recommending 2000 mile interval oil changes on thses motors now. A good friend that did the heads told me this was originally a Ford designed engine and that they sold it to Chrysler. Don"t know how true that it is. Sorry this got so long. I had an older Dodge with the 3.3 and it was good. My wife really likes the styling and the do drive good. However, this one is going bye bye now that it"s running good and no more Dodge"s. Good luck to you with these 2.7"s, you"ll need it.
