I used to work as a propulsion engineer for Boeing and we had some instances of bacterial crud in fuel tanks in the late '60's, particularly from customers that were flying into the semi-tropical and tropical areas where high humidity was present. The research at that time indicated that bacteria were growing in the interface between the condensed water and the fuel. There were biocide fuel additives that could be used to kill them but you really had to change your fuel filters regularly. The best prevention is keeping water out of the fuel. For us tractor guys, that means keeping your tanks full to reduce condensate and using filters and water separaters on the fuel storage tanks. Once you have the problem, you have to use the biocide to kill it and change your filters until all the crud is eliminated or drain and steam clean the tank and change the filters.
