As long as your welder isn't pulling down generator frequency(RPM's) or voltage too far, it shouldn't hurt either one.
Be aware though that if either one of those things happen, either unit or both could be damaged.
It sounds to me like your setup is probably working OK if it's not making the engine labor hard.
