Retaining the original ballast resistor and adding another 1.6 Ohm resistor IN SERIES works well.

The original resistor is a positive temperature coefficent resistor, meaning that it starts out at a low resistance when the ignition is first energized, and then the resistance increases over a period of a minute or two.

This provides a "hotter" spark for starting, when the starter is drawing down the battery voltage, and then the increase in the resistance helps with longer point life and a cooler-running ignition coil.

Retaining the original ballast resistor and adding the additional resistance keeps the PTC feature, for easier starting.
