Thats the first Deutz I have herd of breaking the crank. The store where I work for sold Deutz new in the 70's and 80's and still sell used ones and parts. We have had great luck with the engines and have sold new and used around 500 tractors over the years. Some have been used very hard on some farms. About 10 years ago a D10006 was in and the motor was almost siezed. The owner was on vacation and the new hired man was using it for spreading manure. The heat warning light was unpluged so when the cooling fan belt broke he didnt see this. The backup is the horn and when this blew he turned the ignition switch off. Being a diesel he kept running it until it started making noises and the motor began luging. With the air temp in the low 90's didnt help. The tractor needed 3 new pistons and cylinders and the front 3 repaired. The bottom ends held up great as there are several with over 6000 hours and not touched. A D8006 that I know of has over 10,000 hours with no bottom end repairs. Is the engine you had the problem with a genuine Deutz engine or one of the sub contracted engines. I have herd of ones with a Torpedo and MeMo label as power units. These were subcontracted from Deutz and I have never seen any to know the quality. Was regular service work done on your engine from new? Was it a high hour engine? I was looking and in 1989 Deutz had sold 4,000,000th air cooled engine. This is doesnt include all the larger water and oil cooled engine they make. With that many out I would guess your problem to be the exception not the rule. I would be curious on more history details of that engine though.

Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
