No matter which way the road runs I like seeing buildings built on true North-South.
As far as heating, insulation is important but far more heat is lost through air leaks. Build to R2000 standards where the house is almost as airtight as a submarine.
Then install a fresh-air heat exchanger. Your appliances,lights and occupants will provide most of the winter heat.
