Rear end oil

I just drained a little oil out of rear end of my Oliver 70, it had a small amount of water in the bottom, it didn't look like oil or feel like oil, it was rusty brown in color. I would like to clean this mess out and fill back up with new oil. Question is, would it be allright to rinse out with something like deisel fuel or kerosene, or is their something else better, or could I just add new oil? Thanks for any help.
