My point is that OHIP has been a great system for all my life, but the bean counters are strangling the life out of it. This surgeon is a young, gifted and innovative guy. I've had several medical friends like him over the years, and they have all left for the U.S. or closed their practices. We can't afford to lose the doctors, but who can make a living getting $285 for six months of pre-natal care and delivering a baby? That's why my next door neighbour closed her practice. The best and the brightest of my students used to go to medical school. Now they go into research. My son's best friend got hired after his B.A. at Queen's to work on a Phd. at Johns Hopkins. They hired everybody in the lab. He should have gone to medical school. His bride was the top nursing grad in her year. Now she's working in Baltimore, as well. 14 years ago I had 10 physicians among the guests at the house for a block party. Now we don't even have a family doctor.
