4 Wheel Drive ? Case 2470

Just bought a case 2470 - we have never had a 4 wheel drive before. Dad used it the other day to pull a couple of huge oak tree trunks down to the wood pile. while pulling one trunk out of the ice and snow , he noticed that just the front left and rear right wheels were spinning. Is this normal or should all 4 wheels turn? 1st time we use it and dont know what to expect.. please fill me in.
