The 88 uses the LANOVA system. It requires the use of ether in virtually all conditions. These pumps out of this era had low injection pressures by today's standards. It is nearly impossible to make one start without ether in low sleeve shirt weather.
The shaft leak should be repairable with a new shaft seal. Be sure to have the pump shop install it.
