Last weekend I was down in the river swamp digging out where the loggers had blocked a gut. When I got home I did my usual greasing before putting Ol' Stoney back in the barn. When I got to the main post the circled bolt caught my eye. No biggie, I thought. I'll just tap it back through and put a new nut. So when I tap it through I find what's in the second pic. Somehow the bolt managed to break off flush with the outside of the collar. That's not where the stress should be. In fact, there shouldn't be much stress anywhere. The bolt's just there to keep the pin from falling out and to be sure it rotates in the bushings. It looks like it's been about to go for a long time, like maybe it got over-tightened and almost wrung off. Oh, well. A trip to town, another 1/2x8 grade 5. Lock nut and not too tight? We'll see. Wm
