You hit a nerve! I one time (tried) to talk to our county tax assessor about property values. He stated that he would like to see all farm land in the county convert to commercial property with higher taxes brought in (we have a lower agricultural valuation on land in this county). I tried my hardest to convince him that the quality of life would not necessarily be better when commercial business owned all property. He seemed to be totally blind to the benefit that land ownership by individuals has on this country. People that own land have roots in a community. Property gives an identity to people that possess it and that is worth more than money can buy. They tend to raise children that understand ownership and the responsibility that goes with it.. in other words they understand their place in the world. They are likely to work for long range goals for the community. They are generally active in church and community affairs for the right reasons. But some will never understand that.
