Brian, The 4240 has a weak casting in the rear that supports the PTO shaft where it come thru on the lower left . bearing has 2 snap rings to hold it in place , rear one is held by a very thin casting and is prone to break. When it breaks it fills the rear with powdered iron. The local deere dealer sold 7 of those tractors and I have fixed 6 of them , the other one doesn't get used with high HP load on the PTO . george
