Depending on the temperature and the model of the engine, it varies. According to Kohler, the old K series and Magnum engines all run 30wt oil in the summer and 5w30 in winter. If it a Command engine, OHV, it needs to use 10w30. The reason, the newer Command engines have hydraulic valve lifters and if you do not use the 10w30 oil, the oil is too thick and the lifters can get to ticking. Mark has had good luck with synthetic oils, I am not 100% on this, never used it, so I cannot let you know one way or the other on that. I know I have used the oils recommened for years with very good luck. I do change oil every 50 hours and usually the oil is as clean going in as going out. but to get this, you need to start this from day one or after a rebuild. So, now it is a personal opinion on what to use.
