can't keep diesel running

This isn't exactly old iron, but need to pick someone's brain. Have a 5610 NH. 2 weeks ago, just quit. No smoke from exhaust when cranked, figures fuel filter. Changed filter, cleaned water separator. Thought I would never get it restarted. Ran fine for 4 days, did it again. Opened bleeder screw, pumped primer a few times, started right up, ran fine till 2night. Pulled out from barn, then it refused to run over idle, no matter where you had throttle. After approx 5 minutes of holding throttle wide open, rpm's slowly went up to 2,000. Ran fine after that. Am I still just getting air out of system? Ready to get rid of d**m thing & just use the M.
