I"ll take a crack at that one! But you see, I"ve only been a driving teacher for 32 years. I have seen Driver Education change over those years, mostly for the better. Most of the teachers and schools I"ve observed have improved their act greatly over the years. Classes are far more rigorous demanding than ever. Here in Michigan, students must drive 50 hours over at least 6 months before they can take their driving test to get a license. Students can start DE before they are 15 years old, which potentially gets them a YEAR to drive with mom & dad. One of the problems I have noted is what I call the "Greyhound effect." (You know - "take the bus and leave the driving to us!") We tuck the kids in the back seat, slap a gameboy in their hands, and a headset on their ears, and they"re all in their own little world. When we were kids, we were in the front seat watching everything our drivers did - by the time we got to DE we had it pretty well figured out. Too many kids today don"t have a clue. I"m apalled at the lack of knowledge these kids come to us with(out). Driver Ed teachers today have far harder job than ever before. We can"t teach common sense. Only experience and maturity can get that. Heard an expert on child psychology the other day - said that many kids don"t develop the ability to forsee the consequences of their actions, until they are in their mid twenties! We"re limited to 30 classroom hours and 6 hours behind the wheel, as a state minimum. We can only do so much in that time. Then it"s mom and dad"s turn. If they"re on the ball, they"ll do far more. Unfortunately, parents aren"t always the best teachers or examples. This is by far the most important class kids will take in their school life. Auto accidents (excuse me, collisions,) are the greatest killers and maimers of our young people. We need to press for more rigorous classes, more time in class and more time on the road. Don"t blame the DE teachers - most are busting their **** out there, risking their lives to get these kids some experience. Anyone want to raise the driving age to 18??????

Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
