I think if you check your manual, you'll find that GM recommends changing the oil at least once a year, whether the oil life indicator says so or not. I know that on some vehicles you should not rely on the oil life indicator if you routinely pull heavy loads at high speeds. This will confuse the system into thinking you're only driving "highway" miles. I know that on the DOHC 4, 5, and 6 cylinder engines in the mid-size pickups and SUVs, the indicator can go as long as 15K miles between changes. A little long, for sure. I think 3K miles between oil changes if overdoing it, though.
