There is a special lockring with a key made on it that locks the spindle nut, it's hard to see and can be harder to remove. If you have a Dana 44/50 axle, you have to remove the inner cam to access the spindle nut. Are you sure you have the correct socket? The spindle nut for auto hubs is 8 sided, it doesn't take the spanner socket. The local Ford dealer here doesn't have the socket and says they've never seen a setup like mine('96 Bronco) althogh the previous owner has the reciepts where he paid them to re-pack the bearings annually...
