You can visit your regional VA office to request the information. In NORTH CAROLINA it is: Regional Office: Winston-Salem 27155 (Federal Bldg., 251 N. Main St.,) 800-827-1000 Try the toll free number if that is too far. They will advise you of the process, or of a closer location that can help you. In all cases be prepared to take some time. You will need a copy of you father's DD214 which is his discharge papers. If you have his military ID, turn it over. The military had copies of the 214 on the back of the ID for some vets. If you don't have that available, take his DOB and Social Security numbers. They will help file the request papers for you. This process takes time. They won't be able to give you the information while you wait. It could take months to hear back so be patient. It is worth the wait. Good luck
