A continuous length of chain ran through the gutters of a dairy barn. The manure spreader was parked under a chute outside. When the motor was turned on, the entire length of chain would start revolving, taking the manure with it, depositing it in the spreader. Typically a daily "chore" on a dairy farm.

This was an incredibly labor-saving invention; no longer having to shovel out gutters by hand.
